How To Calculate Your JAMB Grade and Know Your Chances of Getting Admission

You may have heard that JAMB now has a new way of grading candidates.

It's no more based just on your JAMB score.

According to The Sun, JAMB now considers your O’ Level score before grading and giving you admission.

So you may be asking yourself, how will JAMB grade me? This post will answer that.

And Here is the formula…

O’ Level score (40%) + JAMB score (60%) = Admission Score

What does this formula mean?

It means that 40% of your admission score is your O’level exam while 60% is your JAMB.

This is how JAMB calculates your O’level score…

If you registered for JAMB with 1 sitting, you get 10 points

If you registered with 2 sittings, you get 2 points.

Your 5 O’level subjects carry points

A1              =   6 points
B2 – B3      =   4 points
C4 – C6      =  3 points

The highest possible point you can get from your O’level result is 40.

For your JAMB result, this is how JAMB gives you points…

JAMB SCORE GRADE POINTS
180 – 185 ————————      20 points
186 – 190————————       21points
191 – 195————————       22points
196 – 200———————–        23points
201 – 205———————–        24points
206 – 210————————       25 points
211 – 215———————–        26 points
216 – 220————————       27 points
221 – 225————————       28 points
226 – 230————————       29 points
231 – 235————————       30 points
236 – 240————————       31 points
241 – 245————————       32 points
246 – 250————————       33 points
251 – 300————————       34- 43points
300 – 400————————       44–60 points

Here is an example: Kemi wants to study Microbiology in the University of Lagos (UNILAG). She scored 248 in JAMB. She used only her WAEC (that is, one sitting) to register for JAMB.

Her O’level subjects are;
Maths              =          C5
English            =          C6
Physics           =          CB2
Chemistry       =          C4
Biology            =          A1

Let’s find out her admission score…

We will achieve this by looking at JAMB’s point table (above) and using the formula…

Admission Score  = O’ Level score (40%) + JAMB score (60%)

First, we start with her O’ level score:

She used 1 sitting            =          10 points
Maths, she got C5             =          3 points
English, C6                        =          3 points
Physics, B2                       =          4 points
Chemistry, C4                    =          3 points
Biology, A1                        =          6 points

So in summary, here is Kemi’s O’ level point…

1 Sitting                     =          10 points
Maths, C5                  =          3 points
English, C6                =          3 points
Physics, B2               =          4 points
Chemistry, C4            =          3points
Biology, A1                =          6 points

So her total O’ level score = 10 + 3 +3 +4 + 6 = 29 points

Now let’s find out her JAMB points

Remember that in JAMB, she scored 248. To get her point, just look at the JAMB point table above.

And from that table, anybody that scores 248 gets 33 points.

So, Kemi’s JAMB score is 33 points.

So far, we have discovered that Kemi scored 29 points in her O’ level exam and 33 points in JAMB.

Now what’s her admission score?

You remember that admission score = 40% of O’ level score + 60% of JAMB score

Let’s turn it to a formula so that you can easily remember. Here it is:

AS = OS (40%) + JS (60%)

Where

AS = Admission Score
OS (40%) = 40% of O’ level Score
JS (60%) = 60% of JAMB Score

So Kemi’s admission score is 40% of 29 + 60% of 33;

40% of 29 = (40/100) x 29 = 11.6
60% of 33 = (60/100) x 33 = 19.8

So Kemi’s Admission Score = 11.6 + 19.8= 31.4 points

PLEASE NOTE: The highest possible Admission point is 52. So Kemi scored 31.4/52.

How To Determine Your Chance of Getting Admission

It's simple.

Check the competition for your course and school. You can do that by looking at last year's statistics. You can find the statistics for your school here.

Compare it with your grade. If after that, you feel confident, congratulations. Your chances are high.

If you don't feel confident about what you see, then consider changing your course or school.

Finally, please don't put all your egg in one basket. JAMB has been known to fustrate a lot of people. There are other less know but EASIER ways of getting admission in Nigeria.
